Schmincke has released a Super Granulating Watercolor Set in Deep Sea Colors. This limited edition set includes five “supergranulating” professional grade watercolors in 5 ml tubes: Deep Sea Violet, Deep Sea Indigo, Deep Sea Blue, Deep Sea Green, and Deep Sea Black.
I’ve always loved the visual effect of granulating watercolors whose heavier pigments sink into the texture of the paper. This set’s cool-toned shades are some of my favorites, Deep Sea Green in particular.
“Schmincke is expanding the possibilities of granulating watercolor painting to include special colors with a supergranulating appearance. The combination of at least 2 granulating pigments intensifies the effect, in which pigments mass together in the texture of the paper, to form “super granulation”. The new colors are formulated with pigments from different color ranges, so that the granulation effect results in additional color changes. For example, the color “Deep Sea Indigo” is a combination of violet and green pigment.”

Watercolor Granulation
Granulation in watercolor painting has two causes: heavy pigments that settle into the paper’s texture and/or certain lighter pigments that group together due to attraction.
Some traditional pigments are more naturally granulating such as ultramarine, cobalt, burnt sienna, and other earth tones. More coarsely milled pigments also tend to granulate. There are many granulating blue and brown colors and hardly any granulating yellows and reds, which tend to be modern inorganic pigments.
The right watercolor paper can also encourage pigment granulation. The rougher the paper the greater the granulating effect, so cold-pressed watercolor paper is your best option.

Deep Sea Set Lightfastness and Transparency
All five colors have a 4 star “good lightfastness” rating. Deep Sea Indigo, Deep Sea Blue, and Deep Sea Green are semi-transparent. Deep Sea Violet and Deep Sea Black are semi-opaque.
Horadam Aquarell Watercolors
Today the Horadam watercolor line (named after Josef Horadam one of the company founders, Hermann Schmincke being the other) includes 139 brilliant, intense colors, 112 of them with the highest lightfastness ratings of 4 or 5 stars. Each color has its own individually optimized formula. Schmincke uses only the highest quality natural gums, water-soluble resins, and pigments. For example, the company uses only Kordofan Gum Arabic from the southern Sahara region, going so far as distinguishing between good and bad harvests or “vintages” of this natural resin when it selects its raw materials.
